UNESCO unveils new AI roadmap for classrooms

According to UNESCO, less than 10 percent of schools and universities are following formal guidance on the use of popular artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including the chatbot software ChatGPT. During an online meeting, more than 40 ministers discussed policy approaches and plans while considering UNESCO’s new roadmap on education and generative AI. While generative AI has the potential to revolutionize education, there is an urgent need to take action to ensure that AI technologies are integrated into education in a manner that prioritizes safety, inclusion, diversity, transparency, and quality, according to Stefania Giannini, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Education.
A UNESCO survey revealed that institutions are facing numerous challenges in responding to the sudden emergence of powerful AI apps. Governments worldwide are shaping policy responses and developing regulatory frameworks for AI and data protection in education. Concerns were raised about the risks of false or biased information and glaring errors associated with using AI tools, highlighting the importance of teachers as learning facilitators. UNESCO aims to provide guidance and training for teachers, engage in global dialogue with policymakers and stakeholders, and develop policy guidelines and frameworks on the use of generative AI in education and research. The launch of these tools is planned during Digital Learning Week at UNESCO Headquarters in September.
