Google’s New Gemini CLI Brings AI Directly to the Terminal

Google just dropped Gemini CLI, an agentic AI tool that runs locally in your terminal, putting its Gemini 2.5 Pro models right where devs work. Unlike cloud-based assistants, this open-source (Apache 2.0) tool hooks into local codebases, letting developers:

🔍 Debug, explain, or generate code via natural language
🎥 Create videos (Veo 3) & research reports (Deep Research agent)
⚡ Run 1,000 free daily requests (2x avg. usage)

If adoption takes off, Gemini CLI could become a gateway for Google’s broader AI ecosystem. But in a market where speed, accuracy, and workflow fit decide winners, Google still has to prove its models can out-code the competition.

At GlenFlow, we see this as another sign of the AI arms race shifting to dev tools. Google’s betting that open-sourcing + high free limits will lure users away from paid alternatives like Cursor or Copilot. But will devs trust it? Stack Overflow’s 2024 survey found only 43% fully trust AI-generated code, and security risks remain.
